On December 10th, 2016, we met up with Rusafa and Faruq for one of the coldest portrait sessions we have ever done.
We woke up to a clear, blue sky, with the sun peeking out from behind the clouds—but it was all an elaborate charade that God was playing with us when we saw the temperature. It was in the 20s, but with the wind chill that froze us down to our bones, it felt like 10 degrees or lower.
Knowing it was going to be cold, we prepped for the day, planning ahead on how to maximize the time we spent outside. But things never go as planned. Once we were out in Brooklyn, we started to notice the colors we could play with and wanted to try different compositions and perspectives to capture just the right shot. But with Rusafa and Faruq huddled up together and shivering as they tried to keep each other warm, we had to put all that aside to race against the clock instead.
We shot in close proximity and didn’t travel too much, since the sun was setting and we didn’t have much time to work with. But even with the freezing temperatures plummeting into single digits forcing us to adjust our game plan, the pictures we got from this session were perfect. Sure, we had a few pictures of them shivering and huddling to stay warm, but those are just for the two of them to remember the adventure that it took to get the rest of them—the beautiful, romantic image we are sharing on this blog.
Rusafa & Faruq, thank you for being such troopers and for smiling all the way through this day despite the freezing cold. It was quite the adventure doing this session with you, but we hope you agree that the images are well-worth it.
